Case Study - Katherine: Exhibitions Volunteer

Katherine volunteered with us while studying for her MLitt in Museum and Heritage Studies. She created an exhibition about the work that goes into preserving HMS Unicorn and other large wooden ships. Here she writes about her volunteer experience at Unicorn:

I would describe my experience with Unicorn as excellent! It was very well organized and the expectations and goals were very clear at the start. Everyone at HMS Unicorn is so fun and welcoming which makes for a great atmosphere.

Creating an entire exhibition 'Saving Unicorn from Extinction' was something entirely out of my comfort zone and felt really scary at times. I am proud of my work and how it turned out and grateful for the help and support I received along the way.

I developed new skills and I learned about some conservation techniques, both in practice and while researching for my exhibition. For example, I was able to hoover out an instrument case and had to learn how to handle objects carefully while doing conservation work. Gaining experience with object handling was great for me.

I feel much more involved in the community through volunteering here - without HMS Unicorn I would not have spent as much time in Dundee or with any Dundonians! I loved every minute of it and appreciated the excuse to get out of the St Andrews bubble. I met so many wonderful people and enjoyed having the weekly social interactions with everyone.

Now I am moving back to the US after completing my master’s degree. I think that my experience with HMS Unicorn will help me greatly in gaining employment!
